The Gabriola Fire Protection Improvement District Annual General Meeting was held on May 6th at 7:30 pm, following the closing of the polls at 7 pm. The last business of the meeting was to announce the election results. The Sounder reports:
There were 685 ballots cast, with 2 spoiled ballots and 2 rejected.
Four candidates were elected:
- John Rankin (562 votes)
- Dimitri Tzotzos (554 votes)
- Liz Wallinger (548 votes)
- Matt Dow (482 votes)
Three candidates were elected for a three-year term, with one elected for only one year, to fill out the term of a trustee who left the board early. (The practice of the board is a shorter term is filled by the elected trustee receiving the fewest votes.)
The inaugural meeting of the board will be held on May 7th from 6 pm to 7 pm, with the main business traditionally being for the trustees to choose the board chair and determine committee memberships.
Chronicles would like to thank all candidates for running: this is how local governance works!
We also want to recognize the work of the trustees who are leaving the board: Erik Johnson and Diana Moher, who ran in this election, and also Ray Appel and John Moeller. Serving as a trustee takes a lot of time and energy—thank you all for your contributions over the past years.
